Tara sa Talk ni Tara McPherson

Tara McPherson is quite the icon in the Art Industry especially in the U.S. so when we heard that she's having a Talk and Q & A over U.P. College of Fine Arts Last Thursday Feb 09, 2012. We (Me, Hanabear and Timcorpse) immediately marked our calendars and attended.

And though it was her second time in our country, (She was one of the speakers in GM 2010). She still had that level of excitement as she shared her artistic journey.

The event was sponsored by Fully Booked as it promote's the launch of her Illustration book. "Bunny in the Moon".
Tara came a long way, and she always envisioned herself doing the thing she loves the most which is painting.
As the crowd listens attentively, she tackled the importance of connecting to your clients and building relations if your up for the field.

learn to say no and give value to clients which you really connect with.

One of the important parts of the talk was when she gave her point of view on art imitation.

this artist is very good friends with the other artist, and i know he'd be influenced, and i think it'll end it up really like he's copying that artist and he's not finding his own voice.."
"... its hard, but you got to go "i just can't touch that!". Find something else that you can explore."

Tara was direct and witty in her answers and she does hate math like most of artists. (it didn't surprise me.:)))

After the talk we had the chance to interact and have her doodle in our notes which is quite awesome if you ask me.

We even got her to do the VXV (Vector X Vexel PH) sign. (how cool is that huh?)

BAKA may exhibit sa sigwada

BAKA may comeback?. Oh yes it is! If your familiar with the iconic BAKA then you'd be happy to hear of its return as founder/creator Meneer Marcelo together with AA dela cruz opened BAKA may exhibit sa sigwada at Sta cruz manila.
Now, I first heard of our lovable cow icon back in its multiply days(old school dude!). The concept is still fresh to me back then but too bad I wasn't able to get hold of the merchandise, well not until gallery night that is. :)

Sigwada gallery reminds me of the native cubao x ambiance minus the hipster feel.
Upon entering you'd be welcomed by Konoi's lovable cow plushy which is part of the registry requirement as you have to strike a pose that serves as a souvenir picture later.(pretty witty!)
An immediate glance and you'll notice the walls are filled with customized sets of BAKA's on cintra boards, even its origins as a comic entry back in 2008 is posted, revealing meneers old art style.(parang manga lang)

you'll have an instant connection with BAKA if your familiar with DIY toys, as it brings out the kid inside of you.

Overall the exhibit is pretty light, giving that much needed getaway from the heavy artsy norms.

Bottomline is you can see how something as simple as a hobby can evolve to something great and obviously BAKA made its way through the years.

On the merchandise topic, BAKA is back in bad ass black and will be in circulation on January 2012. The first sets however can only be pre-ordered on the exhibit or by contacting Meneer and yes, they retained the custom name tag which is one of the shirts signatures. :)
you can choose from four template designs namely default, nerdy, smiley and I forgot the other one.(darn it) Now, what are you waiting for?

VxV PH Project Sendong.

This may very well be the most important project of VECTOR X VEXEL PH, as group members put their pentools aside and

help our fellow country men in CDO which have been devastated by typhoon sendong.

Thanks to the initiative of fellow admins and group members, everyone now is doing their part to spread the word, donate old clothes, water and other basic needs for the victims.

The good news is you don't need to be in the group to help out.

LBC has offered free shipment of donations until december 23 (may be extended) and you can drop your donations there so

lets all take part and give hope, as we are needed most by our people.

VXV's 1st Anniversary (Recap).

It was such an awesome experience to finally meet some of the members for the very first time as VECTOR X VEXEL PH celebrates

its first year anniversary and grand EB last sunday December 18 2011 at the Capital G. Robinsons Galeria Ortigas.
The program was a huge success thanks to the members of the VXV admins for their efforts and devotion. (I didn't help out all yikes.)
A 5 hour seminar that includes some of the finest talents of the group was held and this is what went down..

The first speaker was Dan Amorsolo which is actually the Great grandson of our renowned Filipino painter Fernando Amorsolo.

He tackled the events of Copyrights that enlightened the members on how it is important to credit images from photos over the internet and
avoid stealing.(which is based from experience)
He is then followed by "Accidental speakers" Ms. Hana Opena Bacasno and yours truly. (We are soo unprepared coz were not meant to speak!)
Hana gave her thoughts on how everyone should see art more than technical skills which is truly an eye opener for everyone.
Her message?

"Know what is awesome art"

know what to appreciate, technical skills is just one of the ingredients and its not everything for you also have to know the aesthetics and grow.

and just like that, she brought house down.
My topic on the other hand is just like what I shared during the past talks which is about Freelancing tips and Networking.

Tim De Leon, one of moderators on shadowness.com opened the last batch of speakers as he discussed the the values of
turning negative critics into positive outlook which is then followed by Ruel Andaya a.k.a RUA as he did some samples of shirt illustration giving some key techniques and tips on shirt design using AI.
Last but the not the least is the VXV's very own founder and president Rizaldy Catapang a.k.a ZLDZ.
Some opening remarks on how the group started was his intro as he then encouraged everyone to learn different
styles and then find their own.

"Its all about self learning" he said as he humbly shared the story of his craft from start and what it is now today and for that I admire him.
Next chapers are all camwhoring, fansigning and getting to know each other phase which is superb,

What I really admire most in VXV is the members cooperation and devotion with each other that its almost like a big family, No snobbish attitudes can be seen as everyone is so warm and approachable especially the admins.
The truth is its not on how great you are on your skill, your talent or your ability to use the pentool but rather how you commit your self to bringing the best out of everything and everyone in the members.
We have truly gone a long way, and I'm sure the bond will get stronger as "the foundation is not the art but the heart."

It's been an awesome year this 2011 and before all the recap, let me re-introduce myself for those who just recently followed me & my works.

My name is Vincent Rhafael Aseo a graduate of Asia Pacific College under AB in multimedia arts in 07. I worked as a multimedia artist in a corporation back in '08, Got into freelance web design in '09 and accidentally into illustrations/vectors last year. Yes, everything was just an accident.

In pursuit of this genre ,I never knew a career is waiting ahead. all I know is I did it not to impress, nor for the money.

I did it because I felt fulfilled in doing what I love.

Luckily, major breakthrough's made its way this year, starting off with Shadowness.com for being the springboard for upcoming artists such as myself, The launch of Vector X Vexel PH group where the bests vector artists are gathered and I am one of the admins, Multiple web and magazine feature, awards, interviews and getting invited for talks by top Universities and college's such as Mapua and Assumption.

Now, Vectoring has certainly become a popular trend and I'm very happy to see new talents on the rise because frankly, they're the one's that
inspire me to push myself further. "Humbled" is what I feel when random people say that they "idolize" me, but honestly, I'm no role model.
I'm just your average guy who found what he is good at doing.

Looking back, I never would have thought that by "Vectoring", Ill find my place.

Earning a spot and be connected with the wonderful talents and artists of the country brings me great joy. Above anything else I would like to thank everyone who continually supports me. Everything I owe to God and to you guys! so you can expect more vector action next year. Coolbeans!

Its been a while since I joined any contest, so this time I thought of going for shirt designs over Mass Canvas. Now for starters, MC is an online contest voting community similar to Threadless and DBH, with the added touch of helping out for a cause. Portion of the sales from the winning designs goes to chosen charities and foundations, so its all good vibes.

Now, their guest Judge is Stan "The Man" Lee, and for all we know, he is the creator and founder of some of the famous Marvel characters(can I hear avengers?). The theme is "The World of Heroes", which challenges the participants to create their interpretation of a Hero or something heroic and finally the important part of this blog post is you get to vote for the design of yours truly! Illustration Seminar @ Mapua Aftermath

So Friday last week, me and my friend Robbie (The Creative Dork) were invited to give a talk on illustrations in Mapua Institute of Technology. The seminar was conducted by D2 (Design Deconstruct),A multimedia design org and though its not my first time there (sir Meneer Marcelo invited me before on his class), This one is a bit different due to, well,..Its official,like, Seminar hall official.

Robbie opened the session in the morning in which I didn't manage to catch, (Coz premiere screwed my Video presentation) but I was able to talk to him upon arrival and get some tips too. One of our problems is landing a "3 hour talk", (Both of us only did An hour & half) but heck i just followed my outline and did my thing.

As I took center stage, I noticed the flood of students in the seminar and was a bit surprised too, but then its that passion to give and I know I had message to share, One of the important parts is bringing the art back in "vectors" through originality and having a unique style and approach. Not aiming for realistic copies but bringing their uniqueness and personality int the art.
Bottom line is, its quite succesful (also thanks to some "beki" hits in which Im fond of doing)

As a bonus, I gave away 2 framed prints of my artwork namely "diwata" and "pound for pound king" through a game which one lucky dude and dudette nailed, after the seminar you can now guess its all cam-whoring sessions and autographs which I really enjoyed.

I get to share my personal dillema's in freelancing too, which everyone is quite a bit curious of, plus some protips on landing clients and starting out. So all i can say is that everything is a fun and learning experience not just for the students but yours truly.

Art Trades

This past month I wanted to do something different in my personal creations, and one that involves participation with other artists/illustrators.
First thing in mind was collabs(collaborations) but, well.. its kind of a cliche' already because ive been doing it for awhile, plus its hard to have a seamless collab on other genre's such as digital paint, traditional etc. so the next best thing? ART trade~ so what is it exactly you say?
From the name implies "Art trades" is a process where two or more artists draw for each other, the usual set up is you ask a specific drawing
from your ATpartner and vice versa. However to make it more interesting, I try to focus on first impressions, thoughts and my partners art.
Its a tip given to me by Mr. Vincent Trinidad as it makes the whole thing meaningful and he's darn right. :) Now before we jump into the whole thing there are some unwritten but obvious etiquette's to be followed.

I almost wept when I first saw Mr. Trinidad's caricatures, much more when I saw his take(Pressured!). I was literally in awestruck. the details, distortion and everything was magnificent. Its really an honor for me to do one for him as I respect his style and his works. Thank you sir!

Value each others time.
Both parties should respect each others time, giving the fact that they have other priorities such as work and all.be precise on what you want and try not to bother your art trade buddy from time to time especially if your not close.

The Creative Dork "Robbie Bautista"

I believe he needs no further introductions, as he is quite popular and not to mention a portfolio to boast, His Illustrations are not only brilliantly executed but brings off a magical feeling that will surely eat your heart out. Whimsical :) char!

-Do not go overboard/Respect each ones styles

This is really an obvious one, never ever request something that is not the forte' of your partner. you don't come up to vector artist expecting a digitalpaint or 3d output, Usually the one who offers the art trade knows what to expect. so please don't ask the impossible.

Lucy Gray "Pawnee Ramos"

God! I wish I could draw like her, thats the first thing that came to my mind when i saw her works. Being a follower of ms. ramos, I can't help but admire her passion over drawing and sketches more than her love for the beatles. truly im a fan! :), She's an awesome digipainter too.

-Always give a 101% on your part.

Don't offer an art trade just to get, but show that you are really worth it by letting your creativity pour out. Have the attitude of giving it your best for your art trade partner because it does not only show good feedback on your art but it reflects on you as an artist.

Robocham "Robcham"

Oh my God it's the RobCham! well being an avid reader of his comics in Tumblr, I had to include him on this one and was glad he accepted. I always wanted to see how I look in his world and yeah it rocks. Hipsters beware...

-Never tamper your partners output without permission

This is a big No~no. Regardless of the intention, Its always important to give your partner a heads up if your gonna change something yourself. In my opinion if you want some changes, you should ask it during the design phase and your partner should be the one to do it. Remember, Its an Art trade! it should be that the whole output is the original creation of each other to retain the significance, atleast for me it is.

There so much more to discuss but experience is the best teacher so there, Thank you again to all the artists mentioned above.

With so many talented bands nowadays, Its very rare for a one to hit mainstream yet stay to their indie roots, much more if they are as talented as "December Avenue". Now I'm no music guru/critic and certainly not a fan-boy but hey, I do appreciate good music.

So whats the fuss you say?

First, hit the youtube button, search and listen to their tracks while reading this (just type the bands name), since that would be a great opener. Now , lets get to their music, if you delve much into how "DA" delivers their lyrics, you'll definitely agree on how honest it is in emotional form, match it up with Zell Bautista's voice(Vocalist) and you got one power balladeer in the front, Take

"I'll Be Watching You" and "Dahan" for example and you' d see my drift. :)

But that doesn't end there.. Overall in my opinion the band stands out on how they sync their music, guitar rifts from Jem Manuel's (Guitarist) solo's will bring out the rocker in you together with Don Gregorio(base) and Jet Danao (Drums) beats.

Try Time to Go , Sleep Tonight, and Confessions. for a full throttle on the bands musical feat.

This is the part where I would say buy their album but, up until now they are only on EP releases. you can buy them at TeeDee and Built By sonic and the shirt is just an added perk :)

they currently have 2 releases, hopefully a full album is on the way.

Finding Nemo / Nemo Aguila's Exhibit aftermath

Two things that always pop in my mind when I hear the name Nemo?.., first of course would be our
friendly Disney "joker fish" and the second would be the three eyed "bochog" like figure..

If your an avid art enthusiast especially on the street side of things, then you may already have seen his style...
My first encounter with Nemo Aguila's art was way back 2008 where Iv'e read some articles about him and also on pulp magazine, I had a chance to duke it out with him along with other talented artists on Yo-Cards Visuals With Vision last 2010 too.
So when I heard about his first solo exhibit, I did not hesitate to attend..not to mention its in Ronac's secret fresh gallery.

upon entering you will be welcomed by his self customized art toys. which he's really good at ever since (you should check the guys multiply,..its insane.)

The bizarre yet captivating three eyed mansta's are present and is all over the place, It almost feels like your in some alien like gallery :D.

What i really admire about the guy (more than his humble persona) is how he manage to stay true too his roots in this ever changing times. Mahirap ha! because there's always a stage when your art is so familiar

hindi na siya papatok. but for some reason, it still emerge with the same feeling just like the first time.(thats my point of view though..)

One thing I noticed Is how he experiments of different types of medium and taking things up a notch to the point that your gonna ask yourself, UY pwede pala yun?!. How he's a genius at putting street art in almost everything that you can think of.

Oh by the way, an added perk (aside from eat and run tactics) is you get a chance to buy the signature botchog manstah art toy. Yeah! the quality is great..and will really look good on top of your other vynil figures.

Mura lang! 5k! (ouch!)>_<... yeah i know, it will make your wallet smoke but hey, its limited to 25-30 figures.

This is for art toy collectors ha...I do collect pero nagstop na ko.. (because I won't have a life if I'd continue collecting).

Overall, I just wanna give kudos to a great exhibit and artist because Nemo has gone a long way, and really..It won't end any time soon.:) so you can expect more of his three eyed creatures everywhere..Char! <3

At long last, My Blog is up, this will now be the page where wip and artworks are first published and random life encounters will be posted. Well, its suppose to be www.aseo.com but too bad all the alternative names are taken (.org, .net. etc.. so there)

the real answer would be...Its Official! like making a statement that this is "Legit"..(haha! yeah you can now throw papers and tomatoes if you think its lame).

No..no.. This site is more of an art journal, some personal things might be posted but the main purpose is that I could get to share my stuff easily and I could visit my favorite pages with ease..plus! Vector X Vexel Philippines

Founded by Rizaldy Catapang a.k.a ZLDZ, last December 24 2010, the groups mission and vision is to "Unite, inspire and support Vector/Vexel artist and enthusiast around the country".

With 24 admins, 300+ members and still growing!...Geez, (averaging 3 to 5 application per day) Vector X Vexel PH is not just an art "group" but a home and family for practitioners of the craft

Collaborations

One of the hottest trends and activities in VxV PH are collaborations which is a good form of icebreaker in terms of style and also encourages more bond amongst its members.

The basic types of collabs are usually divided frames set ups. but Im glad to see that members are now slowly changing it into a much more creative approach.

At this rate there's no telling what VxV PH might grow into. There are planned expansions and projects, but really, ... everyone is just having a good time. :) One things for sure though, Philippine Vector/Vexelling is Alive and here to stay...like,.. Forever dude.
